GWINN, Mich. – Gerald Allen Groff, age 70, of 110 Fury Street, Gwinn (Sawyer Location) entered eternal life Tuesday morning, November 1, 2011, at Marquette General Hospital in the loving, comforting care of his family.
Jerry was born March 22, 1941 in Escanaba, a son of Herman and Lola Faye (Walker) Groff, and was a 1959 graduate of the Escanaba High School. He moved to Manitowoc, Wisconsin and was employed in a cabinet factory for a time. When his parents relocated to Green Lake, Wisconsin, Jerry moved with them and worked for the Berlin Journal as a typesetter. He also was employed with Goodrich Home Furnishings and True Value Hardware in Berlin. On August 2, 1969, Jerry married Sharon Ann (Brooks) in Escanaba. A skilled craftsman and exceptional carpenter, Jerry worked in Ripon-Berlin, installing carpeting and flooring. For over 45 years, he worked as a flooring specialist, most of that time self-employed. Additionally, he worked at the foundry in Berlin from 1973 to 1985 and at the foundry in Fredonia until that facility ceased operations. He was employed later with Gulfstream Aerospace in Appleton, Wisconsin, a division of General Dynamics, as an upholsterer. He often spoke of his days with Gulfstream and how he loved and enjoyed his job and coworkers.
In 2007, Jerry and Sharon moved to Sawyer where Jerry enjoyed working on their home. He always seemed to have some home project in the works and had set up a workshop in the basement.
Jerry was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying outings with his sons-in-law, friends, and especially with buddies, Big Dan and Little Dan Arts of Escanaba. His canine pals, Daisy and Hannah, were almost constant companions and Jerry loved to rabbit hunt with his friend, Butch Dowell in Berlin. While residing in Berlin, Jerry was a member of the Berlin Jaycees for many years, serving as state director, and was instrumental in organizing Berlin Summerfest where he ran the beer tent concession.
