Pete Cortez Jr., age 79, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at Heartwood Lodge in Spring Lake. He was born October 23, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas, to Pete and Juanita (Gonzalez) Cortez, and lived most of his life in the area. On January 14, 1961, he married Guadalupe Loera in Muskegon, and she survives him.
Pete was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having enlisted twice. He served in the Vietnam War. He worked 30 years as an electrician for CWC-Textron prior to his retirement. Pete was a member of St. Patrick-St. Anthony Catholic Parish in Grand Haven. He enjoyed morning walks with his friends and was an avid reader.
Survivors include his wife, Lupe; four children: Rita (David) Oliver, Juanita Briggs, Pete Cortez III and Albert (Gena) Cortez; seven grandchildren: Devon (Matt) Mapes, Chelsea Oliver, Miranda (Joshua) Rudkin, Jenna Briggs, Pete (Lauren) Cortez IV, Rianne (Alex) Huntoon and Max Cortez; six great-grandchildren: Francesca and Pete Cortez V, Everette and Deacon Huntoon, Charlotte Oliver, and Makenna Rudkin; a brother, Geronimo (Jean) Gonzalez Jr.; four sisters: Isabelle (Alvino) Villa, Olivia (Juan) Mancilla, Connie (Chon) Lopez and Elida (Roberto) Miranda; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Sally Portenga.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, April 8, 2019, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church (920 Fulton Ave., Grand Haven) with the Rev. Father Charles Swartz presiding. Interment will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens with Military Honors offered by American Legion Honor Guard. Visitation will be held one hour prior to Mass, 10-11 a.m. Monday, at the church. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers can be directed to St. Patrick-St. Anthony Catholic Parish.
