TRAVERSE CITY [mdash] On March 8, 2019 another angel joined God around his throne. Alice Irenie Olive Thomas, 90, passed away while surrounded by her children at her daughter’s house in California. She was born May 7, 1928 to Leonard and Mary on the island of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands.
Irenie was a devoted member of First Christian Church in Traverse City. She spent her retirement years volunteering at Father Fred and her church. She enjoyed knitting, sewing and singing. But, most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.
Irenie’s life was full of travel and changes. When she was 10 years old, she moved to Antigua for schooling. While working at a bank there, she met her husband, Lionel (Checkers). With the children in formative years, the family moved to Montreal, Canada. She lost her husband there and moved to Muscatine, Iowa, to finish raising her children.
She was a hero to her children and grandchildren. She showed them how to be strong and selfless with her discipline and unconditional love. We would like to remember her for bringing light, happiness and world knowledge to everyone she met. We know she is basking in the splendors of heaven with a good rum punch.
Irenie is survived by her three children and their spouses, Lionel Thomas II (Kathy), of Traverse City; Patricia, of Sacramento, California; and Jacqueline Andrews (Alexis), of Antigua. She is also survived by eight grandchildren Renae, Lionel, Pierce, Liam, Grace, River, Zoe and Ayesha; and two great-grandchildren Dylan and Bradly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lionel; mother, Mary; father, Leonard; and brother, Art.
A celebration of her life will be held on May 6, 2019 at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church in Traverse City.
In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to St. Vincent de Paul, 1207 Woodmere Ave., Traverse City, MI 49686; or The Father Fred Foundation.
