Alfred Cornell Ver Berkmoes, age 91, of Spring Lake, Michigan, went to meet his Lord, Saturday morning, May 25, 2019.
He was born on July 12, 1927 to Joseph and Gertrude (Voogt) Ver Berkmoes in Grand Haven. He married Jacquelyn Jane Koats on June 10, 1949 in Grand Haven. She preceded him in death on August 31, 1997. He married Dorothy (Sterzer) Young on April 7, 2001 in Grand Haven.
Alfred proudly served his country in the United States Navy going to Camp Shoemaker, California and boarding the aircraft Carrier USS Kwajalein serving in Hawaii, New Caledonia and Japan during WWII. He was employed by Anderson Bolling for 20 years and retired from Burnside Manufacturing as a tool and die maker after 20 years of employment.
Al was a member of Second Reformed Church and was a life time member of Charlies A. Conklin American Legion Post No. 28. He enjoyed traveling, woodworking, bowling, outdoor activities and watching TV, especially the Detroit Tigers.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy of 18 years; daughters, Susan (Dave) Hirdes of Spring Lake, Linda Ver Berkmoes of Spring Lake, David (Christopher Wheaton) Ver Berkmoes of Spring Lake, Alan (Marie) Ver Berkmoes of Livermore, California, and Scott (Jenny) Ver Berkmoes of Castle Rock, Colorado; 8 grandchildren (David, Tricia, Brad, Ashley, Brittney, Cody, Tim and Kevin); 5 great-grandchildren (Katie, Alex, Kieran, Cayden, and Alaina); brothers, Clarence and Jerry (Betty) Ver Berkmoes of Grand Haven; sisters-in-law, Jane Ver Berkmoes of Florida and Joan Ver Berkmoes of Grand Haven; and nieces and nephews.
Step-family includes Karen Leatherman, Roberta (Pat) Twa, Kathleen (Ron) Lawson and Lisa Young; 11 grandchildren (Jacob, Luke, Abby, Adam, Benjamin, Lindsay, Cameron, Casey, Quartus, Landen, Ayla); and 12 great-grandchildren (Ella, Lucian, Hattie, Mazie, McKenna, Molly, Genevieve, Cora, Ronni, Braidi, Ty and Lennon). Alfred was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph and Gary and sister, Jacoba Rowell.
A funeral service and military rites will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 31 2019 at Second Reformed Church, 1000 Waverly Ave., with Rev. Dan Eisnor officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service at church.
