KALKASKA [mdash] Carl Wayne Bell, 73, of Kalkaska, lost his long battle with cancer on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2019 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City while surrounded by his family. He was born on Sept. 19, 1945 in Evart to the late Ray and Helen (Fredrickson) Bell.
After serving honorably in the U.S. Army in Germany, he attended college in Lansing and Owosso.
He married Darla Haring on May 20, 1967 in Flint.
Carl’s job at Consumers Energy Gas brought him and his family to Kalkaska. After retirement he returned to work as a gas line inspector.
Carl dedicated many years to the community, including the Little League program and the kid’s trout pond during Kalkaska’s National Trout Festival.
Carl enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends. Other hobbies included hunting, fishing, golfing and singing karaoke.
Carl is survived by his devoted wife, Darla; daughter, Emily (Tom) Caswell; grandchildren, Johnathen Keaton, Carter Caswell, Tiffany Root, Katelyn Bell and Alyssa Keaton; siblings, Grace (Lincoln) Kinney, Don Bell, Russ (Mimi) Bell, Herb (Edna) Bell, Bob (Sherry) Bell and Christie (Don) Dunlop; sister-in-law, Betty Bell; many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; great-great-nieces and nephews; and one great-great-great-niece.
Carl was preceded in death by his daughter, Sarah Jean; son, Kurt David; and siblings, Iris (Dave) Jehnzen, Hazel (Bill) Spence, Charlie (Joan) Bell and Clare Bell.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Wolfe-O’Neill Funeral Home. Funeral services will be on Friday at 1 p.m., with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given in Carl’s name to the VFW Post 8684, 408 Hyde St., Kalkaska, MI 48646.
