Former Houghton Lake resident Richard F. “Bubba” McCoy, 80, Alexandria, KY, died Sept. 2, 2020, at Hospice of Cincinnati, surrounded by his family.

A celebration of his life, with a memorial graveside service, will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m. at Roscommon Township Cemetery, Houghton Lake Chapel. Burial will follow with military honors. Christler Funeral Home, Hougton Lake, and Cooper Funeral Home, Alexandria, KY, handled arrangements. Memorial donations may be made in support of the Alzheimer’s Association.

He was born to Joyce and Leo McCoy April 9, 1940, in Grand Rapids. After graduating from Houghton Lake High School, he received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Michigan State University and a master’s degree in public administration from National University in San Diego, CA.

He met his wife, Andrea, at a Western Michigan University Veteran’s Club party. They fell in love after he wrote her a thank you note for being such a great date. The two were married in July, 1967.

Mr. McCoy worked in Federal Government Services for more than 31 years. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1959 to 1964. He began his 27-year career as a federal agent for the Department of Justice in 1969, then later became a Special Agent in Charge of the Cincinnati DEA office until he retired in 1996. He liked working with the local police departments, and at his retirement he received the recognition of Honorary Kentucky Colonel.

He loved being outdoors, and he especially loved to fish and hunt. He had a great love for his dogs and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Leo and Joyce McCoy; brother, Ralph McCoy; and brothers-in-law, Jim Tremper, Charlie Kyser and Mike Shelley.

Surviving Mr. McCoy are his wife of 53 years, Andrea McCoy; son, Timothy (Nicole) McCoy; daughter, Kristin (Roger) Schalk; grandchildren, Megan, Amanda and Nathan Schalk and Eleanor McCoy; sisters, Florence (George) Turney, Carol Tremper, Marsha Kyser and Donna Jean Shelley; sister-in-law, Gail McCoy; and many nieces and nephews.
